Tales From Rumi

  Author:  Jalaluddin Rumi

  Subject:  Misc. moral tales

  Grade level: 5-7

  Rating:  3 stars

This book contains stories that are rich in history.  Each story is beautifully illustrated and provides an insightful look at learning about Islam through fables and legends.  Each story concludes with a valuable lesson that children can learn from.

Although this book is rich with valuable lessons, it is not intended for very young children.  The vocabulary level is also not appropriate for the very young, but the stories, however, if adapted by the teacher,  would be a beneficial tool in a lower level class.  Some children may have difficulties with the vocabulary and this in turn could hinder their understanding of the lessons they can learn.

If used as a teaching resource, this book can be a great contribution.  This book would be most appropriate for ages 8-10 years old. Ages 6-7 years old would also enjoy this book, but they would need someone to simplify the vocabulary and elaborate the stories.  (Teachers would also have to provide some background information before they teach some of the stories to children.)
