Fifth grade is the last mediocre level before the great leap forward
experienced by six graders. Although a few bright fifth graders will have made a
mental evolution to critical thought, the majority of fifth graders will be at a level
that is not too much different than fourth grade.
An added burden to any teacher is the physical growth factor of this
age group. The boys tend to be rowdy and the girls tend to be easy prey to emotional
wars with each other. Students will experiment with lying, cheating, fighting and
rivalry. If it is not nipped in the bud it can be a serious handicap in later
grades.
Stories must include a reflection of their confusion and must be
exciting to read. Holding their attention requires it!
